Severus Snape was a half-blood, the only child of a pureblood mother and a Muggle father. His father's abuse towards his wife and son after he discovered magic left Severus with a somewhat twisted view of Muggles. Despite this, when he was Sorted into Slytherin, he tended to use blood-status as a last resort. His own need for power, the power he lacked at home, drove him to research the Dark Arts, becoming fascinated by them.
No one quite knows what his grudge against James Potter was, only that in second year, he threw a bone-shattering hex at the Gryffindor that left James in the hospital wing for three weeks.
Severus argued that he hadn't been aware of the severity of the spell and, with nothing to contradict that, he was left off with a week of detentions, but it sparked a feud between Severus and the Marauders that would last a long time.
After Hogwarts, Severus joined Voldemort's ranks. Only he knows why he chose to leave the Death Eaters and betray the Dark Lord, but he became a useful spy for the Order of the Phoenix, and took the job of Potions professor at Hogwarts.
